"A NEW RICHARD BARRE NOVEL IS REASON TO BREAK OUT THE CHAMPAGNE."
-Dennis Lehane, author of Shutter Island and Mystic River

1940: In driving rain, in darkness, fabled Lake Tahoe steamship Constance slips beneath the surface of Echo Bay. Present: once-hot Olympic skiing prospect and living dead-end Shawn Rainey is thrown both spar and ultimatum-sell the dream of raising Constance to the town he fled, suspect in his brother's drowning death, or lose his children to forces he himself unleashed.

Shawn, desperate, accepts and runs head-on into his past: into a darkening cloud of murder and deceit, hatred and betrayal, big money and bad blood. To head off the unthinkable and survive, Shawn must confront not only his own violent past, but battle those hell-bent on destroying him and those he loves.

Echo Bay, in the suspense tradition of The Deep End, is award-winning crime author Richard Barre's first stand-alone novel, a millrace of turning pages and ever-rippling tension.

"A STUNNING NOVEL OF BETRAYAL AND REDEMPTION…"

The reviews are in-Echo Bay rocks:

"The wounded hero-physically, mentally, spiritually-has become such a cliche of mysteries and thrillers that it takes a brave and talented writer to keep us reading. Luckily, Richard Barre has both qualities to spare. And his first stand-alone novel-a break in his splendid, Shamus Award-winning Wil Hardesty series-has another great advantage: It's set in and around Lake Tahoe, that magical body of water that straddles the California-Nevada border and is dark and deep enough to make it the perfect breeding spot for Loch Ness-type legends."
-Dick Adler,
Chicago Tribune

"Combining a skein of haunting secrets worthy of Ruth Rendell or Thomas H, Cook, with swift, surprising action, a vivid and unique setting, and crackling dialog, this is captivating psychological suspense of the first order."
-David Wright, Library Journal

"Smart, crisp, often lyric prose that, by itself, is worth the price of admission. Let Echo Bay ease you into the books of summer-it is a pleasure that will set the standard and spoil you nicely."
-Lin Rolens, Santa Barbara News-Press

"In addition to building suspense and evoking a setting with both warmth and terror, Echo Bay displays Barre's writing talents. His voice is unique, his words and images powerful, and his thoughts on the human condition heartbreaking. Echo Bay is a stunning novel of betrayal and redemption."
-Les Roberts, Cleveland Plain Dealer

"This is promising material, and Richard Barre does well with it… Shawn has his own secrets to protect, and his realization that he must sacrifice these for the information he needs to solve the mystery adds yet another novel element to a book with more than its share."
-Dennis Drabelle, Photos of herpes, herpes pictures : pictures of herpes. Washington Post Book World

"Barre is one terrific writer. His characters are alive, his settings so well-drawn you'll swear you've been there. And you'll want to read some of his sentences over and over, just for the sounds of the words."
-S.J. Rozan, author of Winter and Night (Edgar Award)

"Burning Moon gives off its own unique light-stylish, rich and hopeful. Barre's latest Hardesty is a worthy successor."
-Don Winslow, author of California Fire and Life

"Few writers are as adept as Barre at creating vivid imagery that so captures the imagination and haunts the psyche."
-MYSTERICAL-E, The E-Zine for Mystery Lovers

PLUS THE STAR

"There is a spooky polish rubbed over all of this, onto every surface until it shines. Barre knows what he is doing and this story shows it. Edgar [Allen Poe] would be proud because it ripples with the muscle of less being more.
-Michael Connelly, author of The Narrows and Lost Light

AND BETHANY

"No one has done [a final chance at redemption] better-in any form-than Rod Serling. Richard Barre shows the same depth and humanity that illuminated Serling's work."
-Robert Crais, best-selling author of
The Last Detective and L.A. Requiem

"The sheer beauty and strength of Barre's writing gives a glow of redemption that is extremely rare in any kind of fiction."
-Dick Adler,
Chicago Tribune
